CHARACTER NAME: Kiritsugu Emiya (Magus Killer)
SERIES: Fate/Zero
CHRONOLOGY: Minutes after his speech to Saber.
CLASS: Anti-hero, but even that can be contested.

BACKGROUND:Fate/Zero takes place in the same world as Fate/Stay Night, which has been explained. To cover the entire Nasuverse would require an entire book, but all you need to know about Zero is that it covers the Fourth Holy Grail War, in which, much like its successor, seven magi summon spirits of heroes chosen by the world, called Servants. They then fight to the death in a battle that lasts a few weeks. Whoever results the victor obtains the Holy Grail, and with it, any wish they choose to grant it.

Kiritsugu is one of the competitors, having entered as the representative for the Einzbern house of magi. Having been chosen for his extensive resume at killing supernatural individuals, he accepts for reasons of his own. He is known as a heartless killer, and the rumors of him assassinating his father (a heretical magus) and adopted mother (as collateral in a mass extermination of ghouls) are not unfounded, even if it was with the belief that it was for a good cause. Starting from the day he saw his childhood friend, shortly followed by his entire island, turned into vampires by magical means, he has reasoned that the world is in a constant state of strife. The Holy Grail War serves as Kiritsugu’s last-ditch attempt at saving the world, given how everything else has barely made a dent in the sad state of affairs he has concluded it to be in.

After a few years of traveling the world as a mercenary, Kiritsugu stays at the Einzbern house as a sort of honorary guest. During this time, he develops a friendship with the grail’s vessel, who would have to give up her life to have it materialize, Irisviel von Einzbern. This quickly develops into love, and for the first time in his life, Kiritsugu allows himself to settle down. He has a daughter, Illyasviel, who he loves and constantly plays with, and leads an ideal, if somewhat sheltered, family life for a whole nine years. It is then that the time for the war comes, and Kiritsugu leaves, promising to his daughter that he would be back.

Kiritsugu is not a very visible player for most of the war. He much prefers to have his Saber Servant, one of the previously mentioned heroes, King Arturia Pendragon, face others of her kind while he aims for the magus that controls them – their Master. Killing the latter does away with the Servant, and being the goal-oriented person he is, Kiritsugu much prefers to take that route. With the help of his assistant Maiya, he personally kills the Masters of Caster and Lancer, steadily losing all of his support to death along the way. It is at the end, when he confronts and defeats the most dangerous Master of them all, Kotomine Kirei, that he realizes the Grail was a sham, in reality an actively malevolent entity that sought to distort any wish granted to it into the death of humanity. Kiritsugu took the only course of action he could at the moment: he ordered Saber to destroy it. This did not go according to his plans, and ended in a fire that ravaged the entire city. Having wished to save lives in the first place, Kiritsugu was devastated. After saving Shirou, a boy who almost died in the fire, Kiritsugu decided to assume a normal family life once again, not abandoning it until his untimely death five years later.

PERSONALITY: Kiritsugu is a person who has, before killing so many others, done away with himself. Outwardly, Kiritsugu makes sure to appear as nothing short of soulless. If it’s for his goals, he will assume actions worse than any villain’s, taking hostages and putting civillians in danger. This is not his real personality, but one he has forced himself to assume so that he may have the Grail grant his ultimate wish, to be discussed later.

Kiritsugu is most often described as a very pragmatic guy. He’s got absolutely no sense of theatrics, and his decision to do something often hinges entirely on whether it will advance his plans or not. Thus, he is one of very few magi to accept technology into their arsenal, making use of a wide variety of firearms. He calls everything that factors into his plans a ‘tool’, even people, in no small part because he wishes to disassociate them from emotions so that they may not hinder things. This mask may break if it concerns someone Kiritsugu does actually care about, such as his assistant, but only in occasions when it is far too late to change things. Then again, it may also do so for the worse, as when he berated his Servant due to his belief that heroes of the past have done nothing but contribute to the decay of humanity.

All of Kiritsugu’s actions go back to his inner base desire of being a hero. It is a childish wish, unbefitting of his rugged, hardened exterior, but it is one he has carried with him his entire life. His only wish is to save people. Kiritsugu does not count those dear to him as more valuable than others, and he would, with great regret, immediately kill a person close to him to save two complete strangers. This is the personality trait that defines Emiya Kiritsugu – the willingness to ‘kill the few to save the many’.

There is a distinct lack of likes and dislikes here, with good reason. Kiritsugu chooses nourishment such as hamburgers not because he likes it, but because he’s able to eat them while doing something. He chooses hotel not for the good service, but because it’s a public spot hard to trace and attack. In this regard, Kiritsugu has succeeded in killing his sense of self, only indulging in his inherited smoking habit out in the open.

Kiritsugu is also explicitly called cowardly in the novel, in his own stoic way. At times, he will actually shirk away from attacking a threat if he believes it to be particularly fearsome, although of course these decisions overlap with his pragmatism. He will always attempt to kill an opponent before they actually realize they’re facing him, and will never willfully conform to a fair fight. Kiritsugu has not the slightest shred of honor, and he rather likes it that way.

Naturally, he's a very intelligent person, and his plans often result in success through their use of knowledge on how other people will react, as well as the occasional investigative work.

In case he runs into his family, discard everything I just said. Around his wife and children, Kiritsugu is prone to assuming a much more cheerful personality, playing around and cracking wise. If Kiritsugu’s good at anything, it’s at compartmentalizing.

POWER: Magecraft. This encompasses a variety of things, even if Kiritsugu’s is fairly normal in comparison to other magi. He is able to use suggestion on people, so long as they have no magic themselves, and is also capable of doing away with magically protected areas better than most other magi, but his real specialty lies in the ability to use Time Alter, which is the ability to create a Reality Marble (a pocket reality created through magical means that often fits the caster’s personality) within his body. This field can be accelerated and stagnated in such a way that Kiritsugu may act at a different speed from other people, giving him an advantage in regards to speed, as well as other unconventional situation in which he may need to slow down his body’s metabolism. One should note, however, that Time Alter comes at a price, and messing with his body like that puts severe strain on his blood flow, threatening to kill him if he ever accelerates his speed beyond twice a normal human’s. This is allowed by his Magic Crest, which is an engraving carved into the body of all magi passed along through their lineage. With it comes the entire research of a family, establishing a hierarchy in the magical community based on family longevity. Kiritsugu’s is on his back, and contains only a fraction of his ancestors’ magical knowledge, having had most of it confiscated by the Association due to his father’s activities.

Kiritsugu is also in possession of an Origin. To simplify it, this is the basis for every human being, and subtly decides what their path in life is. Kiritsugu’s is Severing and Binding. While this may explain why his life is in a constant irrepairable state of decay, it has a much more practical purpose. Since his Origin is bound to his body, Kiritsugu can force his Origin unto others by inserting a piece of himself. He achieves this through the use of what he calls ‘Origin Bullets’, .30-06 bullets with two of his powdered ribs within. When these come in contact with an enemy capable of magecraft, they cause an amount of magical (by which I mean it destroys their ability to use it) and physical damage proportional to the amount of magecraft they were using at the time. This usually results in a win-win situation for him, since the target can choose to block it by physical means and fail, unless they have armored-vehicle caliber protection, or do so magically, and suffer the aforementioned consequences. Kiritsugu is in possession of 27, having already used 39.

Kiritsugu’s main method of combat involves the use of firearms, be it at close quarters or, more often, sniping. He has a lifetime of marksmanship training under his belt, and has impressive aim and reflexes, although not as good as in his prime. While he has absolutely no qualms about switching things up to suit his needs, he does have a few weapons he favors. I have described them in detail here.

However, he suffers from the fact that so few individuals in this place hold a mindset similar to his. If he is to acquire knowledge, he has to take matters into his own hands. Thus, he sets up a new anonymous post, making sure to make himself untrackable first. He shows absolutely no effort at empathizing with the crowd that will read it.]

The last incident did not look like the work of a single individual. Has anyone made any connections to anyone else?

[Kiritsugu figures that, regardless of his own beliefs, having one less ‘villain’ around can only be a good thing. Fortunately, they have a disturbing tendency of not dropping character, unlike their opponents. This is quite helpful for Kiritsugu, who is rather eager to take advantage of the fact that a sleeping supervillain is much easier to kill than an awakened one.]

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: Too many, a rooftop view of the city serves as an inspiring visage, reflecting the architectural work and millions of lives transpiring within. It is a thin line that separates this from a utilitarian point of view. Architecture may be used as a weapon, and lives can be spied upon to gather all-too-useful information. In a new location, such a vantage point can provide a gold mine of resources. A man in an overcoat as dark as his gaze takes advantage of such a fact, looking at the world ahead.

The man, Emiya Kiritsugu, does not indulge in hate very often. It is an emotion, and thus, utterly inefficient in the field of battle. Having entered a situation completely alien to him, it is more important than ever to assume his normal methods, that he may resolve things as soon as possible. This is what a lifetime of subscribing to pragmatism has taught him.

And yet, Emiya Kiritsugu can’t help but feel the very distinctive pangs of derision every now and then. A whole city filled with superheroes almost sounded like a private hell specifically crafted for him. It would have been one thing if their actions contributed to the world at large. In such a situation, the Magus Killer may have very well let it go in the interest of maintaining order. But this wasn’t anything like that. Too many naïve ideals permeated this city. Kiritsugu couldn’t accept such a large amount of individuals believing that everyone could be spared. He couldn’t bear the carefree attitude with which the affair was approached.

Most of all, he knew he had to do something about the exuberant amount of glamour they injected into the business of helping others. Did they not recognize that this is what led to the arms race between the city’s opposing sides? A contest to show who held superiority wagered with the lives of hundreds of innocents. At that moment, Kiritsugu wished for the disappearance of superheroes just as much as supervillains, regardless of how much he may innerly wish to count himself as one of the former.

No more than idle thoughts. Kiritsugu has a mission to take care of back home. He will see it through. Once the Grail has been attained, philosophical quandaries like those will mean nothing. Kiritsugu opens the door to head back down, into the depths of a world he had yet to stain with blood for the greater good.
